New Hobby Ideas for a More Unique YOU

Hobbies can get you in better shape, earn your money, or just challenge you to learn new things.  Don’t be intimidated by your current lack of knowledge about a certain topic.  Online classes, friends, and classes at the local park and rec department are all great places to help you on your journey to learning a new skill! Whether you choose to learn photography or take up skydiving, get started on a new path today!

Learn to Sew:

Learning to sew is on the top of my ‘wish I could do’ list.  If you are looking for new hobby ideas that can save and even EARN you money, this is it.  I just paid a friend hundreds of dollars to make my kids tshirt blankets for their beds.  She is earning a TON of money making these for friends and family!

SewingMachines.com has a wide variety of sewing classes as well as all the items you need to begin sewing. Whether you are looking for your first sewing machine or need parts to fix an old one you inherited, this site can help.  They also offer just about every accessory you could think of from scissors to coat buttons!  This is a great resource when it comes to learning how to sew.

Start Dancing:

Okay, please do not judge me but many years ago, I took a line dancing class at our local Parks and Recreation department.  I love country music and line dancing was a great way to get exercise and have fun all at the same time.  There are all sorts of dance classes available, whether you want to go solo and learn to line dance or take a class with your significant other and learn to waltz. If you are looking for new hobby ideas that burn calories, dancing is a great one.  Heck, join the local gym and take Zumba classes.  They are a combination of dancing and aerobics and WOW is it an amazing workout!

Knitting:

My mother knows how to knit.  My daughter is learning to knit from a friend of hers.  *I*, however, do not know how to knit and I really wish I did!  If you are looking for new hobby ideas that can earn money, this is a great one.  Learn how to knit scarves, hats, and baby blankets and you could create a side business that could earn you a few pennies! I found a ton of knitting supplies on Amazon for my daughter at Christmas time.

Music:

Learning to play an instrument is a great hobby.  If you want to cut costs, rent your instrument from a music shop and teach yourself at home with books and online instructional videos.  If you are willing to spend a little extra money, buy an instrument and get private lessons. I have a piano sitting here in my living room from the many years that my daughter played and I am determined that one day I am going to learn how to play it! Check out Take Lessons for private live online music lessons via Skype.

Cooking:

Okay, so you probably think cooking is more of a CHORE rather than a HOBBY, right?  Well, cooking can actually be a lot of fun.  It is also a great hobby to start with your significant other.  Take cooking classes with your husband or wife and start creating healthy meals from scratch for your family.  Learn to embrace the beauty of creating a delicious meal instead of getting bogged down in the drudgery of the whole thing! Or, try your hand at making homemade candy.  Whatever you choose to make, just get in the kitchen and give it a try!

Genealogy:

My father has been a genealogist for years.  He got started looking into our family tree when my sister and I were young and now has a HUGE database of our family history including old books, photos and legal documents.  I have a small file of my husbands family history that I would love to get started researching but can’t seem to find the time.  This is definitely a time consuming hobby but one I have always found fascinating.  Check out the National Genealogical Association for more information.

There are a lot of really creative ways to spend your free time (when you can find some!).  If you find yourself spending hours watching TV or playing online games, ask yourself if there is a new skill you could learn instead!
