I am not a huge fan of buying things premade.  I much prefer to start my meals from actual food ingredients…meat, veggies, spices.  That, to me, is real food.  Of course, real food isn’t always as quick as processed food but just because it is made from scratch doesn’t mean it has to be hard or time consuming.  Yes, you will need to do more than just open a can but you will not need to spend all day in the kitchen, either.  This homemade Sloppy Joes recipe starts with a few basic ingredients but does not require that you be a skilled chef in order to get dinner in front of your kids.  My husband LOVES Sloppy Joes but grew up thinking they came only from a can.  Oh, how wrong he is!  Hope you enjoy these homemade sloppy joes and you can be happy knowing exactly what is in them. Serve this easy dinner recipe with a side of raw veggies and you can have a healthy meal from scratch and on the table in 15 minutes!

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 10 minutes
Total Time 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 pound extra-lean ground meat (I used ground pork)
  • 1 onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 bell pepper, diced
  • 1 can red beans, drained and rinsed
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 3 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp garlic salt
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Rolls for serving

Instructions

  1. In a large saute pan over medium high heat, brown the ground meat. If it is particularly greasy, drain and rinse.
  2. With the browned meat in the saute pan, add the onions, bell pepper and garlic. Cook 3 to 4 minutes or veggies are almost tender.
  3. Add the remaining ingredients into the pan and stir until well mixed.
  4. Simmer 5 minutes over medium heat to blend flavors
  5. Serve on rolls

  1. No truer words were written. I never use premade mixes such as Bisquick or Hamburger Helper or boxed mac and cheese. Or canned biscuits. It amazes me how many people do, when it’s so easy to make yourself. I am making your sloppy joes for dinner tonight. I haven’t ever added beans to mine, so this will be fun!
