I have told my family multiple times that I really think we should adopt nudity as a way of life.  I would save SOOO much time and money if we could just stop washing and drying clothes every day.  Unfortunately, no one really seems like this plan.  I guess we would get a little bit chilly in the winter, right? So, since I can’t stop dealing with the laundry, I have to find ways to save time and money on this much-dreaded chore.  Last summer, the teens started washing their own clothes, thus saving me a ton of time.  Next comes saving MONEY.  I thought I would share a few tips for saving money on laundry that we can all use to cut our household costs a bit!  Keep reading for my frugal laundry tips and some great info on ENERGY STAR certified clothes washers and dryers from BestBuy.com!

Tips for Saving Money on Laundry

Tips for Saving Money on Laundry

The easiest way to start saving money on laundry is to stop washing it so much.  Rewear clothes to save on laundry costs and make them last longer. Clothing for teens isn’t cheap.  I want it to last as long as possible! Here are more frugal laundry tips:

  • Only wash full loads:  Just because you need a certain pair of leggings by tomorrow isn’t really a great reason to waste all that water.  Look for a washer that has a ‘small cycle’ feature if you are prone to last minute laundry crises.
  • Measure your laundry detergent:  Without measuring detergent, you will pour in way too much.  Use the lid that comes with the detergent to measure it out.  I use about half of what the container calls for and my laundry comes out fine.
  • Skip the expensive softeners, dryer sheets, etc. Consider making homemade dryer sheets if static is a problem and look online for other homemade laundry products.   Check out the University of Illinois’ stain removal database to find out how to treat tough stains.  If you must use store-bought dryer sheets, only use half!
  • Wash only in cold:  You really do not need to use hot water to clean clothes.  It wastes a lot of energy and is harder on your clothing.  Wash in cold only and you will save quite a bit on energy costs.
  • Clean your dryer filter regularly:  Proper air flow will ensure that your clothes dry as quickly as possible.  Keep the dryer filter clean and you will use less energy drying your clothes.
  • Only buy ENERGY STAR certified clothes washers and dryers.  Washers and dryers are energy hogs so buying ones that are energy efficient is a great way to reduce your utility bill.

  • If all clothes dryers sold in the U.S. were ENERGY STAR certified, the energy cost savings would grow to more than $1.5 billion each year and 22 billion pounds of annual carbon pollution would be prevented.  This is equal to the emissions from 2 million vehicles.
