My daughter has incredibly thick hair that is also very dry.  The combination of the two means that some days she practically looks like a lion with her hair poofed up around her head!  Now that summer is here and she is in and out of the pool every day, the problem is even worse.  Nothing like chlorine to strip the oils from your hair completely.  We have tried different shampoos and conditioners.  We have tried leave in conditioning lotions, sprays, and oils.  Nothing has helped much so far but wow are we going broke buying all these hair products!  I decided to try to make a homemade hair mask to save us a few pennies while we deal with her dry hair.

Homemade hair masks can include a number of high protein, high fat food ingredients.  I found some that had milk and honey, others than used avocados and a few that included mayonnaise.  I combined a few of the recommended hair mask ingredients that I actually had in my pantry, added some essential oil and whipped it  up in my Kitchenaid mixer.  The resulting hair mask is light and fluffy with an amazing scent!

A rich and wonderful smelling hair mask with all natural ingredients!

Prep Time 45 minutes
Total Time 45 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil (solid, not melted)
  • 2 TBSP olive oil
  • 1 TBSP honey
  • 10 drops Rosemary essential oil

Instructions

  1. In a small glass bowl, combine olive oil and honey. Heat in microwave (carefully!) for about 20 seconds, just until honey dissolves when stirred. Let cool
  2. In the bowl of your mixer, place the coconut oil. Whip on high speed for 2 to 3 minutes.
  3. Slowly (very important!) drizzle the olive oil/honey mixture into the coconut oil while continuing to beat on high. You want it to remain as fluffy as possible.
  4. Add in the essential oil and mix well.
  5. Refrigerate for 30 minutes
  6. Beat again on high to incorporate as much as as possible
  7. Store in a clean container with lid in a cool spot
  8. TO USE: Apply to wet hair. Apply liberally and let sit for 5 minutes. Rinse with warm water. Wash and dry hair using your regular shampoo and style as usual.
  9. Repeat weekly or until hair is smoother and more manageable

  1. I like to dye my hair but I can usually feel the damage done to my hair afterwards. I’ll have to try this mask after I dye my hair next time to see how it helps.
