Interested in better health, supporting a good cause, and getting outside? Doing a 5k is right up your alley.  And just because you don't live in a major metropolitan area, doesn't mean you can't join the fun!  The Wounded Warrior Project Carry Forward 5K offers a virtual 5K to get you involved no matter where you live.

What is the Wounded Warrior Project Carry Forward 5K?

Wounded Warrior Project Carry Forward 5K is a project to honor and empower wounded warriors. It offers a  tangible way to support wounded warriors and their families.

Sometimes we need to stand up for those who have fought for us. How? By supporting the programs they need to live life to the fullest on their own terms.

Over the years, I have had several friends and family members over the years serve our country by joining the military.

I remember as a kid, watching my dad get ready in the morning in his Navy dress uniform.  I was fascinated by the shiny shoes and the cool hat.

The mission behind the uniform was more than my little self could understand. However, as an adult, I look back and realize the importance of his service.

And as an adult, I can better appreciate the weight every service member carries with them. Both during their service as well as afterwards. As a thank you for their service, the least I can do is raise awareness for the services they need after they return home.

How hard is it to do a 5K?

Let me tell you, the last couple of years have been challenging to my workout routine.  I have gone from hiking and martial arts a few years ago to swimming and walking as I battle ongoing knee problems.

But, there are all sorts of ways to complete a 5K.  Walk, run, bicycle it with your kids.  Just commit to doing it and get moving.

Get your kids off the couch.  Teach them about supporting a good cause.  Talk to them about a friend or family member's military service.

What makes the Carry Forward 5K unique?

The Carry Forward 5K is unique! Why? Because participants choose to complete the 5K in one of three symbolic ways. You can:

  • Carry a flag to show support and patriotism.
  • Carry a weight to represent the responsibilities veterans carry while serving our country.
  • OR Carry another person to symbolize one warrior carrying another in their time of need.

Military personnel carry a lot of weight on their shoulders.  Both ACTUAL weight as well as emotional and psychological weight.  The I Carry For campaign puts the symbolism of “carrying for” a wounded warrior, veteran, and active duty military member front and center!

Get Involved in a Good Cause

The needs of wounded veterans are great and growing. According to a Harvard study, the costs of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, including veteran care, are estimated at $4 trillion to $6 trillion.

And the war isn’t just affecting veterans. Family members work to adjust to a new normal when they give up paid employment to become caregivers, affecting their quality of life

In FY 2018,Wounded Warrior Project invested over$197million in life saving programs and services for warriors, family members, and caregivers

It is mind boggling to think of the number of services that military personal need after they come home.
