Summer Activities for Kids: Create a Toyrarium #MiracleGroProject

This Summer Activities for Kids article is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of Miracle-Gro for SocialSpark. All opinions are 100% mine.

Well, today is my kid’s last day of school and then we have 2 1/2 months of unstructured summer fun.  Oh, sure, they have a few camps and a family vacation to look forward to but there will be endless hours of free time as well.  During that free time, I will hear an unending stream of ‘I’m bored’, ‘there’s nothing to do’ and from my son ‘I’m hungry!’.  So, what is a mom supposed to do when here kids are home all day during the summer with nothing to do?  Find some easy summer activities for kids, of course!  There are a ton of ways to keep kids entertained without plugging them into the TV, video games or other electronic delvices.  When I was browsing through a list of easy summer activities for kids I really liked this one because it combines my own love of gardening with my children’s love of getting dirty and having fun.

The Miracle-Gro website has a great selection of easy garden projects that you could get your kids to help you with.  The Gro Project has step by step directions and photos for the Toyarium but also has other projects like a Ukulele Garden and an Origami Garden. Thesefun garden projects are a great way to keep your kids entertained this summer without plugging them into electronics.

Summer Activities for Kids: Toyrarium

So, how do you make a Toyarium?  It is a very simple project that uses Miracle-Gro soil, an old fish bowl, and whatever toys and plants you want to use to create your masterpiece.

1. Cover the bottom of the container with rocks

2.  Fill it about 1/3 full with Moisture Control Potting Mix

3. Use a spoon to plant your flowers or succulent cactuses in the bowl.  Add more soil if needed.

4. Set the scene with small toys

5. Give the bowl a small amount of water.  Make sure to not add too much.  If you use cactuses you will need very little water.

6.  Sit back and enjoy!

You can choose whatever ‘theme’ your child loves to create your toyarium.  Add plastic bugs and small flowers to simulate a garden.  Add small dinosaurs and cactuses, or even a collection of tiny fairies to make a fairy garden.  The possibilites are endless!  To learn more about Miracle-Gro and their easy garden projects, check out the Grow Project video below.

Raising Teenagers: Keeping the Lines of Communication Open

Raising Teenagers: Keeping the Lines of Communication Open

This post on raising teenagers was made possible through a review item.  All opinions expressed are my own.

Raising teenagers has proven to be challenging.  I used to think that raising toddlers was the hardest thing I was going to have to do.  I was sorely mistaken about this! My kids have entered that phase of their lives where I am beginning to suspect that aliens have taken over their bodies.  Most questions that I ask them are answered with an eye roll or a grunt and look of ambivalence.  Clearly they believe that I have no idea how difficult their lives really are.   I want to be a part of their lives and have an open dialog with them but some days this is incredibly tough.  If you are trying to keep the lines of communication open with your kids like I am, here are a few tips on raising teenagers that you may want to keep in mind.

Raising Teenagers:  Keeping the Lines of Communication Open

tips for communicating with teens

1.  Know their friends:  A teens most important thing at this age is their friends and their social life.  Raising teenagers is hard to do if you don’t know what is going on in their lives.  Offer to drive them places, have their friends over to visit, and get to know the people who your teens spend time with every day.  And almost as important as knowing their friends is knowing their friend’s parents!

2.   Listen more than you talk:  I always seem to have something I want to tell my son.  Stop belching, sit up straight, work harder, don’t do that…the list goes on and on.  Every once in a while I have to remind myself that the more I talk, the less likely he is to listen.  I become some sort of white noise that he can drown out and ignore.  I have been trying to pick my battles more carefully and open my ears more when he talks to me about his day.  Those moments when he opens up don’t come often so I want to make sure I take advantage of every one that presents itself.  Raising teenagers is impossible if we don’t understand what is going on inside their heads.  Inside their heads is a very confusing, chaotic and messed up place so any insights he can provide are very helpful.

3.  Give them their privacy:  My kids have both become obsessed over the last year or so with privacy.  I DETEST locked doors and it is a constant battle to get them to leave them unlocked while still knowing that I will knock and ask for permission before entering.  It doesn’t help that sometimes I forget and just walk in.  We are both trying to get it right.  Respect their privacy.  Let them have their private phone conversations with friends and their diary that they keep locked and hidden.  If you truly suspect a huge problem…drugs, suicide, etc…then you will have to rethink the privacy issue.  However, don’t invade their privacy just to find out which boy they have a crush on or which friend they are jealous of.  Sometimes teenagers need to have secrets as long as they aren’t harmful to their health or the well being of those around them.

4.  Love them for who they are:  Try to avoid criticizing things that you would like to change about your teen.   Telling them they need to lose a few pounds or wear less makeup or fix their hair a different way will not make them feel very good about themselves.  If you really think they need to change something, make your suggestions subtle.  Suggest that you and your daughter have a day at the salon together and both get your hair done.  Ask your son if he wants to join a gym together so that YOU can shed a few pounds.

Raising Teenagers

5.  Make time to do things together:  Your teenagers will have all sorts of varied interests and many of those are things you can do with them.  It can be as simple as making dessert together on a rainy afternoon.  My son and I have been doing Tae Kwon Do together for the last year and have really enjoyed it.  We both get some exercise and have some mandatory time spent together every week.  Maybe next time your teenager  says that they want to see the new movie that just came out you can make it a mother/teen date night.  Bribe them with candy money if you have to!  Raising teenagers isn’t cheap, right?

Raising Teenagers and communication

Do you ever feel like you are speaking an entirely different language than your kids?  Sometimes my kids will come out with a word or phrase that has me looking at them like they are insane.  I am a very intelligent woman.  I have a college degree and I love to read.  I think I have a fairly extensive vocabulary but I will be honest, raising teenagers has me wondering if I am somehow ignorant. They have words in their vocabulary that completely baffle me.  My daughter told me we were cray-cray and I honestly thought she was insane.  What sort of language is she speaking?  I was recently sent a cute set of cards from Knock Knock to help open the lines of communication with my teens.

Raising Teenagers and learning slang

The Knock Knock Slang Flashcards are a fun way to learn how to speak the same language as your teens.  These cards are a cute balance between fun and educational.  There are 50 cards, plus an accordion-fold game insert.  On one side you have the slang word and the other is a humorous dictionary style definition with synonyms, a picture and a funny sentence that shows you how it is used.  I spent some time going through these with my teens and we had a blast.  Some of the terms I was already familiar with but other terms none of us could figure out what they meant without reading the back.  I am sure my kids are going to go to school tomorrow and entertain their friends with their expanded vocabulary!  Overall, a fun way to connect with my kids that will hopefully help me figure out what they are saying most days!

Summer is almost here and that means a lot more opportunities for entertaining.  Whether it is having friends over for dinner or hanging out at the neighborhood pool party there will be plenty of opportunities for eating and socializing in the coming months.  I love to cook….grilling out, casseroles, or homemade baked beans are all delicious.  However, what I really love to make are desserts!  Everything from simple cookies and brownies to the more complicated cakes, tarts or trifles.  Sometimes, however, I am pressed for time and don't have time to make a full meal and dessert for my guests.  There are times when store bought desserts are a necessity but I still want something that will wow my guests.  If you are pressed for time but still want a spectacular dessert, Prive Selections Upside Down Cakes are a great option.
